Usury
Home » Articles » General Topics » UsuryPraise be to Allah and May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon his beloved Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H.) and those who follow his guidance till the Day of Judgment.
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam, we have previously spoken about some of the things which Allah has made forbidden. And this repetition of mine today is meant to remind and awaken those who are asleep, to inform those who are oblivious, to deter the perpetrators, to cause to return those who are indulged in sin and in order for the disobedient one to repent. Before dwelling on another major sin, we would like to remind you with a couple of things:
First: Allah Most Exalted does indeed get angry when his prohibitions
are violated, so protect youselves against the wrath of Allah.
Second: Allah has guided and showed us the right path but in terms of
[people’s response to that guidance, there are those who are grateful
and those who are ungrateful. Allah says in the Quran: “We showed him
the way, whether he be grateful or ungrateful (rests on his will).”
Third: the way of salvation is pretty clear for those who seek Allah and
the next life. No one should ever think that there exists any trouble
or hardship in following the way of Allah. For Allah has made no
difficulty in religion and has not commanded people to do what they can
not afford. Thus, every Muslim is duty bound to protect himself against
and keep a way from destructive and suspicious issues. One should be
sufficiently cautious to do things which are Halal and thereby create a
space between him and Haram things. The prophet is reported to have
said: “make between yourselves and Haram matters a protection or a
shield from Halah.”
Brother and sisters in Islam, we will continue our talk on one of the prohibitions in Islam. We will speak about usury which is one of the major sins that is not taken seriously enough by people these days. The prophet referred to the fact that the appearance and spread of this sin is one of the indications or signs of the imminent coming of the Hour of Resurrection. Ibn Mas’ood related that the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) said: “around the Hour of resurrection usury, adultery and wine will become widespread. Even those who do not deal in usury will be subjected to its dust. The Messenger of Allah is reported to have said:” A time will certainly come when there will not remain anyone but eats usury and if one does not receive such interest, some of its dust will reach him.”
Brothers and sisters in Islam, I relate to you a vision seen by the prophet and as you all know the vision of the prophets is true and is part of prophethood. On the authority of Samara Ibn Jundab who said:” whenever the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) finished one of the prayers, he would turn his face towards us and would say: “who among you saw a vision tonight? If anyone of us had a vision who would relate it. And one day he asked us: “did any one of you have a vision? We answered: “no.” he thereupon said: ” but I saw tonight two men who came to me and took me from my hands and brought me forth to the sacred land and within the context of the story the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) said:” then we set out till we came to a river of blood in which there was a man standing in the middle of the river and on the bank of the river there was a man carrying stones in his hand. Whenever the man standing in the middle of the river wanted to get out, the man standing on the bank would throw a stone in his mouth forcing him to go back where he was. This sort of thing would be repeated again and again. The Prophet (P.B.U.H.) then explained to them that those who are unable to get out of that river are the people who eat usury.
Brothers and sisters in Islam, the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) did tell us that many things unlawful will prevail at the end of time so much so people will not make any effort to ascertain or verify if their wealth and possessions are collected from Halal sources or not.
It is related in the authentic book of Hadith that the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) said: ” a time will come when the person will not care wherefrom he has earned his money: from Halal or Haram source.
